When Should You Trim Your Trees?
Timing matters. The wrong season can stress a tree or spread disease. Here's what you need to know for Minnesota.
Best time for most species. Trees are dormant, structure is visible, and pruning cuts heal fast when spring growth begins.
Good for dead wood removal and minor shaping before full leaf-out. Avoid pruning oaks in spring to prevent oak wilt.
Limited to dead wood and hazard removal. Heavy pruning in summer can stress trees.
Generally not recommended — wounds heal slowly heading into winter and can invite disease.
Oak Wilt Warning: Do not prune oak trees between April and July in Minnesota. Freshly cut oak wounds attract beetles that spread oak wilt — a deadly fungal disease. If an oak needs emergency trimming in this window, immediately paint all cut surfaces with wound sealant. Call us for advice.
