Best Time to Trim Trees in Minnesota

Pruning at the wrong time can stress trees, invite disease, or reduce flowering. Here's a seasonal guide for Central Minnesota.

Late Winter (February - March)

**BEST TIME for most trees.** Pruning during dormancy minimizes stress and disease risk. Wounds heal quickly when growth resumes in spring.

  • ✅ Maples, elms, lindens, ashes (if not infested), birches
  • ✅ Fruit trees (apples, crab apples)
  • ❌ **DO NOT prune oaks**—wait until late summer to avoid oak wilt
  • Spring (April - May)

Good for **deadwood removal** and minor shaping, but avoid heavy pruning as sap is flowing.

  • ✅ Spring-blooming shrubs (after flowering)
  • ❌ Oaks (oak wilt beetles are active)
  • Summer (June - August)

Limited pruning recommended. Best for **corrective pruning** and removing storm-damaged branches.

  • ✅ Oaks (after July 1st, once oak wilt beetles are no longer active)
  • ❌ Heavy pruning stresses trees in heat
  • Fall (September - November)

**Generally NOT recommended.** Wounds heal slowly heading into winter, and fresh cuts can invite fungal infections.

    Oak Wilt Warning

**Never prune oaks between April 15 and July 1 in Minnesota.** Sap beetles are attracted to fresh oak wounds and spread the deadly oak wilt fungus. If emergency pruning is needed, immediately seal all cuts with wound paint.
